Semester Exchange Programmes

Students from partner institutions are welcome to study as exchange students at UM. As an Incoming Exchange student, you can study at UM with tuition-waived for one or two semesters and the credits you earn here may be transferred back to your home institution.

To apply for the incoming student exchange programme, you must be nominated by one of our partners which have a formal student exchange agreement with UM. Please contact your exchange officer at your home institution for more information.

Students coming on exchange via a faculty level exchange agreement are restricted to enroll in the courses provided by specific faculty that has the agreement with your university. Students coming on exchange to UM via a university level agreement are able to choose courses from across the university, provided that you meet the pre-requisites and there are quotas availability. Students should consult your academic advisor at your home institution or contact your International Office for credit transfer and academic consultation.

We only accept nominations from our exchange partners. Individual applications will not be accepted.  Students interested in applying for exchange to UM should approach your exchange officer at your university for more information. A set of the following nomination documents should be submitted to the Global Affairs Office / Host Office at UM via your International Office/ Department Office:

  1. Academic Transcript in English which shows the accumulative GPA of the nominees;
  2. Programmes & Year of Study the nominees are applying
  3. Course Selection Form
  4. CV
  5. Personal Statement
  6. Recommendation Letter from home university
  7. The research project for Postgraduate Students if they would like to take research-based programmes in UM
Accepted nominee will receive an online application link for course pre-enrollment and documents upload. Students who do not meet the online application deadline cannot do the course pre-enrollment, course enrollment can only be done upon arrival at relative faculties.

Please prepare the below documents to be uploaded onto the application system.

  1. 1 Colored 1.5 Inch White Background Photo
  2. Copy of ID Card & 港澳通行証 (For Mainland Exchange Students only)
  3. Copy of Passport
  4. Latest Academic Transcript in English (issued by Home University)
  5. Copy of Medical Insurance which covers the period of stay in Macao (if you would not like to join our University Medical Scheme, not applicable to Mainland Exchange Students)

A set of the below documents should be submitted upon your arrival:

  1. Designated Medical Examination Form sent by UM Registry
    Remarks:

    • The Medical check-up has to be done within three months before coming to Macao (except Mainland China Exchange Students)
    • The Medical check-up done at home country must be signed by home doctor for validation.
  1. English Report/ Film of the X-Ray Test on Lungs
  2. Copy of Tetanus Vaccination Record
  3. 3 Colored 1.5 Inch Passport-sized Photos (with white background) for student visa application, UM registration and accommodation check-in

Visiting Student Researcher Programmes

The Visiting Student Researcher Programme provides opportunities for postgraduate students to conduct research at UM. Students who participate in the Programme will be attached to a Faculty/ Institute and engaged in research activities under the supervision of UM’s academic member(s), with a minimum duration of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months.

To apply for the Visiting Student Researcher Programme, you must be nominated by one of our partners which have a formal visiting student researcher agreement with UM.

Students coming via a faculty level visiting student researcher agreement are limited to conducting research under the supervision of a specific faculty/institute that hosts the agreement. Students coming to UM via a university level agreement may conduct research at one of UM’s faculty/ institute. The student’s research direction should match that of the proposed host supervisor and must meet the academic and/or research requirements of the proposed host supervisor. Students should consult your supervisor or relevant advisor at your home institution for your research plan at UM.

Postgraduate students (including Master and PhD students) who meet the following requirements are eligible to apply for the Visiting Student Researcher Programme.

  • complete at least two semesters of study of their current degree programme at home university before the commencement of the research attachments;
  • fulfill the minimum language requirement set by UM;
  • specific requirements of applied faculty/ institute (if any).

The application will be opened twice a year.

September to October For research attachments that commence within January to June of the subsequent year

  • Research plan
  • Language proficiency certificate, if any

IAESTE Internship Exchange Programme

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, for the safety and well-being of the students and UM community, IAESTE activities in UM in 2022 will be suspended. Please stay tuned for more updates.

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE A.s.b.l.) is an independent, non-profit and non-political student exchange organisation, as well as the largest organisation of its kind in the world. IAESTE provides paid, course-related internships for students in the science and engineering disciplines, and high quality trainees for long or short term projects for employers. Currently, there are over 80 countries and regions involved and over 4000 internships exchanged per year globally.

IAESTE activities in Macao are administered by Global Affairs Office of University of Macau and jointly managed by Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS). Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is a mobility programme commissioned by the European Commission to facilitate mobility and exchange of students and professionals in the education sector within and beyond Europe. UM as one of the participating institutions in Macao SAR, we has sent and received students, professors and administrators to/from higher education institutions in Europe for academic endeavours and exchange of experience to promote mutual understanding and professional growth.
