University of Macau (“UM”) established the Incoming Exchange Scholarship (“IES” or “Scholarship”) to attract more international students from world-renowned universities and /or academic excellence students to pursue semester exchange at UM. The IES is administered by the Global Affairs Office (“GAO”) and supervised by the Vice Rector (Global Affairs).

The IES aims to subsidize part of the exchange expenses. Students should make sure to reserve sufficient budget to cover all necessary expenses during the exchange and should not consider scholarship as the main financial source.

The IES targets incoming undergraduate students who are recommended by UM’s Exchange Partners to participate in UM credit-bearing semester exchange programme, which will be conducted in the semester following the application period under student exchange agreements.

  • Applicants must hold a valid foreign passport and have good academic records.
  • The Scholarship is mainly targeted at University-level exchange programmes and may be extended to Faculty-level exchange programmes, subject to quotas availability.

Students are not eligible for the IES in any of the following cases:

  • Previous awardee of IES;
  • Receiving any other scholarship or fellowship from UM for the same exchange exercises.

The Scholarship with a fixed amount of MOP 15,000 (around USD 1,800) will be granted to each Awardee. It is a one-off payment for the whole exchange period of one semester or one academic year.

The quotas of IES will be defined on a yearly basis subject to the funding availability.

Selection Criteria

  • All eligible candidates will be evaluated and selected in a fair and objective manner.
  • The academic performance, home university’s recommendation, etc. will be taken into consideration.

Selection Process

GAO evaluates the applications according to the abovementioned criteria. The selection result on the list of awardees will be endorsed by the Ad-hoc Committee of Global Affairs, and then approved by the Scholarship Committee as final.

Application Timeline

The calls and applications of IES corresponds to the students’ exchange in the following semester. The IES will be called twice a year, usually in January (for exchange in 1st semester of the following academic year) and September (for exchange in 2nd semester of the current academic year).

Application Channel & Documents

Eligible students should apply the IES via their home universities within the application period. Supporting documents such as certificate of academic awards and/or documents that show the students’ academic activities or research abilities can be provided for evaluation, if any.

* Late and incomplete application will not be considered.

Release of Results

  • GAO will inform the applicants about the result of the IES by email via their home universities.
  • An awardee may relinquish his/her Scholarship by sending a written notice to GAO via his/her home university before his/her exchange at UM.

  • The Scholarship will be released to the awardees after their arrival and registration at UM.
  • Awardees are required to hold a local bank account and update the information of “Receiving Bank Account” on the ISW and make sure the Bank Account Number is correct. The IES will be transferred into the awardee’ bank account stated on the ISW.
  • UM serves the right not to release the monetary award of the IES in case an awardee fails to receive the IES due to incorrect Bank Account Number or delay in submitting the Bank Account Number (before the end of exchange at UM).

Awardees should arrive at UM within 15 calendar days after semester starts. Otherwise, UM reserves the right not to release the monetary award of the IES.

The IES (both title and monetary award) will be revoked in any of the following cases and the awardee concerned is liable to refund the full Scholarship (if the Scholarship has been disbursed to the Awardee):

  • An awardee doesn’t participate in the exchange programme in-person (e.g. participating online);
  • An awardee defers his/her exchange at UM;
  • An awardee withdraws or terminates the exchange before or during the exchange period due to personal reasons;
  • the exchange programme which an awardee participated in is cancelled;
  • An awardee is determined to have made a false statement on his/her application;
  • dismissal of the awardee by the UM

*If the Exchange Programme was terminated before normal exchange period due to circumstances which are beyond the awardees’ reasonable control, cases will be considered by the Ad-hoc Committee of Global Affairs on a case by case basis.

  • An awardee during his/her exchange at UM is expected to accept UM’s invitation to take part in activities that aim to promote the exchange programmes of UM.
  • Non-fulfillment of the above mentioned obligations will be recorded down in the awardee’s student file, which will be taken into consideration in his/her on-campus activities, funding, or future applications at UM unless it is duly justified.
  • If an awardee is determined to have made a false statement on his/her application, in addition to the revoke of the Scholarship (both title and monetary award) (awardee concerned is liable to refund the full Scholarship if the Scholarship has been disbursed), UM will reject his/her scholarship applications for the next four years.
