The 2013 Higher Education Development Summit, organised by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR and hosted by the University of Macau (UM), was held on 6 November on UM’s new campus. Approximately 100 university presidents, professors and scholars from Portugal, mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao attended the summit. Many scholars expressed the opinion that greater autonomy is a prerequisite for greater competitiveness.

The summit focused on three topics, “Scientific Research and Its Function in Education”, “Student Affairs and Campus Education/New Media’s Role in Higher Education”, and “Different Modes of University Governance and Their Applicability / Internationalisation and Networking”. Revolving around the three topics, participants discussed ways to establish an innovative platform for collaboration in education and research amid the increasing globalisation of higher education so that the collaboration mode can play a bigger role in the Greater China region, Asia-Pacific region, and beyond.

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR Cheong U, China Association for Science and Technology Vice President Chen Zhangliang, and UM Rector Wei Zhao officiated at the opening ceremony.
