- It is the student’s responsibility to handle his/her course selection and credit arrangement.
- Seek advice and support from your faculty’s general office in relations to academic issues concerning your exchange. In most cases, your programme coordinator or Head of Department will be assigned as your academic advisor. They will be able to advise you on transferability of credits which you will take at the host university.
- Students should understand that hosting university reserves the right not to allow exchange students to enroll on selected courses based on their own policy. Students should be prepared that not all credits taken during exchange can be transferred back to UM due to policy of your own faculty.
- Students should confirm with their programme coordinator on selected courses by obtaining approval from the programme coordinator on the Learning Agreement before they leave for exchange.
After knowing the result from the host university and before arriving at the host university, the student should have a good level of preparedness for exchange. There are many things you may help yourself prepare for a memorable and productive exchange. They include, but are not limited to the following:
- Arrange visa, if required;
- Arrange insurance and leave a copy of insurance policy and number to your family;
- Get approval of Learning Agreement from your programme coordinator for credit transfer;
- Research on your exchange university, destination city and country;
- Arrange health check;
- Complete and submit the emergency contact sheet to your host department
- Obtain emergency contacts of persons in UM in case you need to seek help from your home university during your study abroad. Simultaneously, leave a name of contact person of your host university to your family so that they can reach you through this person, if needed;
- Prepare yourself mentally and physically, and get ready for the journey!
- Pre-Departure Notebook
- Get tips also from students who had been exchanged to the same host university. Ask them on life, studies, and ‘must knows’ in the exchange destination.
Nevertheless, there are few things you will need to do after your exchange. They include, but are not limited to the following:
- Apply credit transfer at Registry/ Faculty with your approved Learning Agreement and the transcript issued by exchange university;
- Application Form for Course Exemption/Waiver
- Submit exchange reports/ survey and provide credit transfer information;
- Be ready to share your experience with your fellow schoolmates;
- Be willing to act as advisor of your peers and other students.
Tuition fees at the host university will be waived for UM full time students who participate in an approved exchange programme.
University Level Exchange Programmes cover most academic fields and are opened to all UM students. Applications should be made directly to GAO via online application system.
Faculty Level Exchange Programmes are exchanges between UM faculty and faculty in counterpart university. The programmes are open to students of specific Faculty/Institute, applications should be made directly to concerned Faculty/Institute.
Students are allowed to apply both University Level Exchange Programme and Faculty Level Exchange Programme. Nevertheless, students should accept only one exchange nomination.
Students are not recommended to exchange in your final semester as your graduation will likely be delayed if you cannot fulfill your curriculum requirement in time before you graduate. Going on exchange in the final semester should consider the following:
- The time necessary to receive the exchange transcript for credit transfer
- The availability of the compulsory course cannot be guaranteed at the host university
Students have to provide the language proficiency as required by the host university when making applications.
Applicants of Tier 4 student visa (for exchange in UK) must provide IELTS results.
To ensure credits taken abroad will count toward your UM degree, outgoing students (for both University Level Exchange Programmes and Faculty Level Exchange Programmes) are recommended to obtain approval from programme coordinator on the Learning Agreement (proposed study plan) before you go on your exchange.
